💥 True Tales Ep. 7: The Secret That Killed Him — A Story I’ve Kept Since 2009

💔 What if someone you loved spoke their entire life — and death — into existence?

In this episode of True Tales, I share a secret I’ve held close to my heart for over 15 years. It’s a story about a dear friend I grew up with — a story that haunted me then and stays with me now. What he told me in a single phone call shaped the way I understand intention, illness, and the hidden power of our words. It’s not just a story about cancer. It’s about what we create — knowingly or not — through our desires, our beliefs, and our words.

🧠 Summary

Back in 2009, I received a phone call that I’ll never forget. It was from a childhood friend — I’ll call him George. He was brilliant. Talented. His parents gave him everything to help him succeed as an artist. But on that call, George confessed something to me that shook me. He said, “If I had my way, I’d live at home and my parents would take care of me for the rest of my life.” That moment hit me like lightning. Not long after, George was diagnosed with cancer and spent the next ten years at home — exactly as he had wished.

🎨 He Had Everything — But He Didn’t Want Any of It

George and I met when we were teenagers. We shared laughs, adventures, and the hopes young people have for the future. George had incredible artistic talent, and his parents spared no expense to support him. Tools. Education. Resources. You name it. I always thought he’d go far.

But during that phone call — with me newly married and struggling to get by during the recession — George told me he didn’t want to be an artist. He didn’t want to work. He didn’t even want to grow up.

☎️ The Moment That Changed Everything

When he said he just wanted to live at home and be taken care of for the rest of his life, something inside me stirred. I thought, That’s such a strange thing for a young man to say. I felt uneasy. Almost like I was hearing a prophecy being spoken into reality.

💔 Then He Got Cancer

George moved to Asia for a while to teach English, and not long after, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. His immune system was wrecked. He had to return home. And he never left again.

His parents, loving and loyal, did everything they could to raise money for his care. This was before the Affordable Care Act, and pre-existing conditions were a nightmare. Thanks to Obamacare, he got the coverage he needed. But he stayed in his childhood bedroom until the day he died — just like he said he wanted.

🧠 Did He Know? Did He Create It?

I don’t think George wanted cancer. But I do believe he created the conditions for the life he secretly desired. He wanted to stay home. He wanted to avoid the demands of adult life. And that’s exactly what he got.

🎥 I Saw the Truth in His Eyes

Years later, I saw George being interviewed on the news about his art. The reporter asked him if he was going to make more, and I watched the glint in his eyes as he smiled faintly and said, “Nope. I don’t have the strength.” And I knew — in that moment — he never intended to return to that life. It was never part of his plan.

💸 The Last Gift

Near the end of his life, his parents were trying to raise funds to help transport him safely due to his fragile condition. I sent them a large check — not because I believed it would heal him, but because I wanted them to know how much I loved them, how much I valued their sacrifice. Deep inside, I knew he wasn’t coming back from this.

🧘‍♀️ Be Careful What You Say — It Might Come True

This story taught me something profound. We truly do create our lives through our words. The ancient word abracadabra means “I create as I speak.” George said he wanted a certain life, and life — in its mysterious, sometimes heartbreaking way — gave it to him.

Since then, I’ve watched my own words more carefully. I used to casually say, “I’m depressed,” and guess what? I got postpartum depression. I don’t say that word anymore. Words are seeds. Thoughts are blueprints.

🎙️ So… Have You Ever Done This Too?

I shared this story not to make you pity George, but to open a dialogue. He got exactly what he wanted. And that’s the point. Be careful what you wish for. Be even more careful what you say aloud. Because you might just get it.
