If you are like me, a person talking about complex social and political issues that are emotionally challenging, then odds are you will face people who disagree with what you say and will try to attack you. I'm sure it's not your first time dealing with online toxicity if you are here reading this article.
1. Remember Your Audience
You are not their audience. They are not your audience. You are too busy to even read their comments. You are too busy helping people and must stay focused on the long game. They are not your audience. They want you to be their audience, and they’re looking for anyone to yell at.

2. Don't Try to Figure Out What They're Saying
Don’t step into their warped mind. You will have to spend time figuring out what they are saying. And you will have to try to step into their shoes to see from their warped perspective.

3. They're Perverts in a Sick Game
Most commenters are deviants who have an unholy addiction to abuse as a form of sexual gratification. Participating makes you an unwitting player in their perverse game of auto-gratification.

4. Remember Who You Are Helping and Why

If you are participating in the political process, remember who you are helping. They are real people. They have real needs. They are feeling scared and alone. You are a helpful, caring presence in their lives. Always keep these people in your heart and mind, and focus only on them.

5. You’re an Advocate: It’s Not About You
Your message is not about you. Your efforts are not about you. It’s about something greater—service, truth, democracy, and freedom. Advocates like you stand between abusers and their victims. If you are advocating for those whose rights are threatened by violent, bigoted extremists, anyone who attacks you is trying to get through you. Don’t let them. You’re standing up for others.

6. Hot Air Is Empty Nothingness
Imagine that winds are blowing around you. These winds sweep away all distractions created by others. They’re just distractions. They’re nothingness. It’s unsubstantiated, meaningless air coming out of their mouths. It has no power over you.

7. Stupidity Doesn’t Deserve Respect
You do not owe stupid people respect. Stand up strong and dismiss it as stupidity. To treat violent words with respect and to sane-wash them by responding with thoughtfulness is a disservice to you. Call it out for what it is. Dispel it by calling it stupid and pointing it out. Bring the attention back to them and their stupidity. They don’t want you to recognize it and call it out. It embarrasses them.
