Should I Be Friends with Trump Voters?

Summary: Friends with Trump Voters?

In today’s polarized political climate, can friendships cross party lines, especially in light of controversial figures like Donald Trump and polarizing initiatives like Project 2025? This article explores the realities, risks, and personal boundaries involved when navigating friendships with Trump voters.

Introduction

I’m Leslie Juvin-Acker, and with my background in international affairs, sociology, and law, I’ve spent years analyzing how politics shapes our lives—not just in policy, but in our personal relationships. In today’s polarized climate, a question I hear often is, Can I be friends with Trump voters? With my expertise, I explore the social dynamics at play, how our political beliefs influence our identities, and what that means for our closest relationships. Together, let’s look at how politics can both divide and unite us, and find ways to navigate these complexities with empathy and respect.

Should I Be Friends with Trump Voters?

In a world where Ellen DeGeneres attends football games with former President George Bush, where Republican Senator John McCain and Democrat Senator John Kerry worked across party lines, and where Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia were opera buddies, it’s clear that many things bind us even when politics seems to divide us. At the end of the day, we are all humans trying to make it through the day.

The Polarizing Impact of Trump’s Re-Election

The shocking re-election of President Donald Trump—a convicted felon and rapist, whose character has been decried by both sides of the political spectrum—has led tens of millions of people to declare, "I can't be friends with anyone who voted for Donald Trump."

Why Do Many Feel This Way?

But why are people saying this? Many Republicans ask, "Can't we put politics aside and go back to business as usual?" The realistic answer to this question is, "Unlikely."

Project 2025: A Deepening Divide

Here, I break down my analysis of Project 2025, which has already been put into action. In short, Project 2025, authored by the white nationalist conservative faction of the Republican Party, intends to create a police state, stripping Americans from all walks of life (working-class individuals, racial minorities, women, immigrants, LGBTQIA+ individuals) of civil rights protections, as well as basic benefits like disability, Social Security, veterans’ benefits, and employment protections. If you haven’t read Project 2025 and are unaware of the long-term ramifications, I suggest you read the entire document and study up on all the ways—even if you are a white, working-class American man—your rights on the job, in lending, and in housing will be severely impacted.

The Real Agenda Behind Project 2025

Project 2025 has documented what Democrats have been saying for years—it’s not about the economy or inflation. It’s about human rights, access to capital, lending, housing, education, product liability protections, health insurance, and shielding citizens from discrimination and violence. The agenda of Project 2025 seeks to return to a world where white, wealthy males control capital, corporations, banking, housing, ownership, women’s bodies, and more. This is not an exaggeration—read the document here.

Democrats’ Concerns Over Losing Civil Protections

Democrats understand the long-term ramifications of stripping back federal protections on civil rights, women’s bodily autonomy, access to education, banking, housing, consumer protection, and healthcare, because their lives depend on it. The American dream is not possible without these protections.

Two Types of Trump Voters

There are generally two types of Trump voters: those who have read Project 2025 and support tracking women’s reproductive activity, using federal agencies and the military as a police state, restricting free speech in schools, and taking away veterans’ benefits, Social Security, and disability protections; and those who haven’t read any of it, relying on biased entertainment-based sources like Fox News, Joe Rogan, and social media conspiracy theories. They believe immigrants, the homeless, and the liberal agenda are to blame for their personal and financial hardships.

Perceptions of Trump Voters Among Democrats

To many Democrats, a Trump voter is either someone willfully trying to revert society to the 1800s, where marginalized groups had no rights, or someone who, through manipulation, has handed political and police power to those with such goals.

Personal Experiences: Listening to Trump Voters

My experience listening to Trump voters has shown that most fall into the second category. When I ask where they get their information, responses often include YouTube, Instagram, Podcasters, TikTok, and Fox News. When asked if they’ve read actual legislation, many admit they haven’t. The reality is that ultra-right-wing media machines control most of their information, creating parrots of misinformation.

The Laws of Evidence and Scientific Method

There’s a reason we have laws of evidence. Federal and state rules of evidence are designed to prove or disprove our claims. We should ask ourselves, “Is what we’re saying true? What evidence supports it?” Yet, since the first Trump presidency, when challenged, many Trump voters dismiss conflicting information as “fake news” without any testing of facts.

The Communication Breakdown with Trump Voters

Without the ability to engage in reasoned debate, communication breaks down. Without communication—a fair exchange of ideas based on substantiated facts—a relationship cannot exist. If a Trump voter refuses to listen or learn from you, there is no true relationship—there likely never was.

Friendship or Involvement? Defining the Relationship

What exists may merely be an involvement with someone who benefits from access to you. I suggest asking yourself, “What am I subconsciously giving/getting from this involvement?”

Friendships and Marginalized Identities

If you’re marginalized and Project 2025 targets you, yet the person you’re involved with is uninterested in its impact on you, they’re not truly a friend.

Republican Factions: Which Side Do They Belong To?

Remember, both political parties contain factions. The Republican Party has seven factions compared to four in the Democratic Party. Some Republicans are anti-Trump, anti-racism, and anti-discrimination. Which faction does the Trump voter you know belong to? Even the most socially liberal Republicans are grouped with the extreme faction due to their support given by their vote and money. For many, this alignment is unforgivable because they've given political power to the most racist, elitist, and violent amongst the flock.

Setting Boundaries for Self-Respect

Personally, I have a clear understanding of true friends versus “involvements.” I am a friendly person by nature. It’s not in my heart to be cruel, violent, or mean to people. I reserve the right to limit who comes into my home, talks to my children, and where I invest my time. On principle, I won’t be unkind, but I also won’t tolerate disrespect and passive aggressive hostility.

Conclusion: Choosing Friends Wisely

Ultimately, who you’re friends with is up to you. Some say, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” Others say, “Build a wall.” Decide wisely, with a clear and thoughtful reason.

Would you stay friends with someone whose political views are completely opposite to yours?

  • Yes, friendship is more important than politics

  • Maybe, as long as we can respect each other’s views.

  • No, our values are too different to stay close.

  • It depends on how extreme their views are.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Evaluating a Friendship with a Trump Voter

When evaluating our relationships, especially with Trump voters, it’s essential to start with an open mind and give the benefit of the doubt. Not all Trump supporters are necessarily aligned with the more extreme views associated with his presidency. However, to ensure our psychological and physical well-being, it’s wise to ask clear questions that help us understand their attitudes and behaviors.

Do they respect your values and boundaries? Are they open to differing perspectives, or do they react defensively or aggressively? Are their views dismissive of basic human rights or discriminatory towards marginalized groups?

These red flags can indicate if a relationship is safe and supportive or if it might expose us to harm, either emotionally or physically. Taking time to assess these qualities allows us to make informed decisions that protect our mental health and personal integrity.

  1. Does this person take the time to listen to my feelings, concerns, and ideas?

  2. Does this person evaluate their sources of information with a critical eye?

  3. Does this person understand how their politics impact me?

  4. Does this person only want me to listen to their rants/speeches/their side?

  5. Does this person speak to me with aggression, hostility, or name calling?

  6. Does this person re-post material that is denegrading, mocking, or de-humanizing?

  7. Does this person carefully explain their reasons for voting for Trump?

  8. Does this person benefit from their involvement in my life? If so, what is that benefit?

  9. Do I benefit from this person? If so, what is that benefit?

  10. Is the Trump voter I know willing to learn and evaluate their ideas?

Empowering Affirmations

  • I value respectful communication.

  • I embrace diverse perspectives.

  • I stand firm in my values.

  • I choose my friends wisely.

  • I respect others and myself.
